7 Ways To Reduce Tooth Sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity is caused when the enamel on the teeth gets damaged, exposing the dentin underneath. Dentin contains tiny tubes that lead to the nerve center of the tooth. When you eat or drink something hot or cold, they reach the nerves in your teeth causing a sharp sensation and discomfort.

There Are A Few Simple Ways To Reduce Tooth Sensitivity:

Use Soft Toothbrush:

Brushing teeth with hard bristled tooth paste can wear down the enamel on the teeth and expose sensitive nerve endings on the teeth. When cold or hot food comes in contact with these nerve endings it causes discomfort. Use a soft bristled toothbrush and brush lightly.

Brush twice a day to keep your teeth free from plague. Too much plague build up causes the enamel on the teeth to wear away and causes tooth sensitivity. It is better to visit a dentist every 6 months for cleaning your teeth.

Use Sensitivity Tooth Paste:

Use specialized tooth paste that are available to soothe the exposed nerve endings. Sensitivity tooth paste works by either numbing the sensation or by blocking the nerve endings. Apply the tooth paste on the sensitive areas of the teeth and leave it on. Rinse your mouth after 30 minutes. Alternatively, at the time of brushing you can just spit out the foam instead of rinsing and rinse after sometime.

Fluoride Mouthwash:

Use a mouthwash that is high in fluoride and low in alcohol. Use the mouthwash and rinse your mouth twice daily after brushing your teeth. Use the mouthwash especially at night before going to sleep as the mouthwash stays on and does not get washed away due to eating or drinking.

Rinse your mouth with salt water twice daily to get relief from sensitivity. You can also mix some rock salt with mustard oil and apply on the sensitive areas of the teeth. Leave it on for 5 minutes and wash it off.

Acidic foods such as tomato, citrus fruits, etc. can cause discomfort when they come in contact with the exposed nerve endings. Hence avoid these types of food to get relief from the discomfort caused due to tooth sensitivity and to prevent further damage to enamel.

Crush a few garlic cloves and make a paste. Apply it on the sensitive areas and wash it off after some time in order to get relief.
