Asafetida is a strong smelling spice, it is a latex gum derived from a perennial herb called Ferula. Asafetida finds its place in Persian and Indian cuisines and has great medicinal value too. It is rich in calcium, phosphorous, iron, proteins, fiber, carbs and carotene. Asafetida has long since been used as a home remedy for numerous health problems and has carminative properties that help in soothing and reducing pain, and alleviating excess gas from the body.

This spice is used in Indian cooking as it helps in better digestion of food. It is especially used while cooking lentils as they are a little difficult to digest and the addition of asafetida makes the digestion process easier.
Treats Acidity And Flatulence
It is a great remedy for treating acidity and stomach spasms and can be taken in a number of ways. Boil a small piece of this spice in some water and drink the cooled water. Or it can be taken orally with buttermilk which helps in expelling extra gas from the stomach. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of asafetida help in keeping the stomach cool and healthy.
Women who experience menstrual cramps and pains, irregular periods and Dysmenorrhea can greatly benefit from the intake of asafetida. This spice can be roasted, ground and added to buttermilk with some ground fenugreek seeds and given to women suffering from period issues to alleviate pain and promote smooth blood flow. Stings And Insect Bites
The bites and stings of bees, wasps, and other insects bites can be healed using asafetida. It can be mixed with water to form a thick paste and applied to the affected area. Let it dry and then wash off. The pain and swelling will subside gradually. This process might have to be repeated a couple of times for complete relief.
For relief from colic pain and stomach discomfort in babies, a paste of asafetida powder and water is made and applied around the navel and left for a while. Gradually we will feel the gas expelling out and the stomach eases and will no longer feel tight and hard to touch.
Powder some asafetida and add lemon juice to it. Apply this paste with a ear bud to the affected tooth and leave for some time. Gradually with 2 or more applications the pain gets minimized. Alternatively, a piece of asafetida kept on the affected area can pull off all the pain from the tooth.
A mouth rinse using cloves and asafoetida can be made by boiling them together in water. Cool the solution and rinse the mouth with this mouthwash to eliminate mouth odor, bad breath, gum and tooth problems from the mouth.
Acne And Pimples
Apply a paste of asafetida and water to acne and pimple marks and leave for drying. Wash off after a while. Apply this paste numerous times till the acne subsides and does not appear again.
Marks And Blemishes
Blemishes, age spots, and scars on the skin can all be removed by regularly applying this asafetida paste. Yogurt can be added to powdered asafetida and applied to the skin to achieve the results faster.
For Cough In Children
Apply some asafetida mixed in water to the chest area of children who are suffering from a cough. The congestion loosens and the child feels relieved from constant coughing and the chest lightens with the outflow of the phlegm.
Studies show that asafetida contains certain compounds that can protect the body from free radical damage and thwart the growth of tumors and caner cells.
It is said that intake of asafetida can treat impotency problems in men. Roast asafetida in clarified butter, remove from heat, mix honey and 1 and 1/2 tsp of the latex of banyan tree. Take this mixture for 40 days every morning to see the improvement.
For headaches due to sinus issues, colds or migraine, asafetida can be effectively used to treat the pain. Simmer a pc of asafetida in 1 1/2 cups of water for 15 minutes. Cool and drink this solution 2-3 times a day to get relief from the headache. Or take 1 tsp of asafetida, dry ginger, camphor,and 2 tsp tailed pepper. Add milk or rosewater and make a thick paste and apply on the forehead and leave for sometime. The pain will subside in a while.
